NASHIK: The state health directorate has set up a three-member committee to investigate the death of a 19-year-old student of the government civil hospital's nursing college here. The student, Supriya Mali, died of brain haemorrhage on Wednesday but her fellow students have alleged that negligence by the doctors and other authorities at the hospital led to her death.

The students said Supriya was suffering from fever and vomiting for a week but was admitted to the hospital only three days back. They alleged that the doctors did not take heed of the situation at the college, though 18 students besides Supriya had also complained of fever over the last 15 days.

The accusations of negligence by the hospital has compelled the directorate to initiate an inquiry into the matter. The three-member committee set up for the purpose comprises B D Pawar, deputy director of the civil hospital, D N Patil, deputy director (nursing), Mumbai, and Mahesh Botle, chief administration officer, health directorate, Mumbai. The committee will submit its report in two days.

A nursing student told TOI that Supriya had fallen from her bed in the ward on Tuesday and was picked up only when other friends pointed this out to the staff. "She did not regain consciousness and died around 1am. She was also not given proper treatment during her hospitalization. When we approached the staff and warden, they flatly refused to attend to her, saying other patients had to be looked after," she said.

Another second-year student of the college said she too had not been attended to after she approached a doctor in the OPD of the hospital. "I returned to my home and was diagnosed with typhoid after a blood test was done by a local doctor there," she claimed.

The students alleged that none of their 18 colleagues who have been admitted to the hospital are being diagnosed correctly. "All are being treated only for fever. Around 35 students have taken ill during the past month," one of them said.

A third-year student said unhygienic conditions in the nursing and improper meals could have contributed to the illnesses. "For the past three years, we have been routinely finding cockroaches and worms in the food. The hygiene in the mess is pathetic. Sadly, we have not been allowed to report these incidents to the civil surgeon or other senior officers," she claimed.

The student said none of them have been allowed leave for the past five months. "We have been working even on Sundays. With no opportunity for rest, everyone is falling ill," she alleged.

Deputy director Pawar said the CT scan done on Supriya had shown no signs of fracture. "The girl's family refused to have a post-mortem done. As an immediate action, matrons L S Lashkare and S A Divekar have been transferred and their charge has been handed over to warden Sandhya Gangurde," he said.

Civil surgeon Eknath Male was allegedly assaulted by Supriya's uncle on Wednesday afternoon. Doctors at the hospital have condemned the act.

The Republican Party of India (RPI), Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) staged protest at the hospital over Supriya's death.

Deputy commissioner of police (unit II) Avinash Bargal said the statements of all the students were being recorded to check if any action could be taken over alleged harassment or negligence by the hospital staff.
