NURSES VOICE
Hi friends,
Nurse as a middle level manager plays various roles and responsibilities in achieving the best health for large population. S/he performs her/his duty in a context which is a dynamic so whatever is thought, planned or implemented is not in vacuum but depends on the context of large system. This larger system is also not static and it changes with person, place, time and need, so we call it as open system where its constituents are interdependent and interrelated on each other. Hence there is a larger complexity which explains a particular person or sub system to behave or act. We (nurse) need to understand these complexities and enumerate ourselves in that, so we will understand the reality. There is a philosophical/theoretical difference between real, actual an empirical (observed).
World is an open system or constellation of structures, mechanisms and context. Realism distinguishes between the real, the actual and the empirical (obsreved). The real exists regardless of our understanding of it, and constitutes the realm of objects, their structure and powers. The actual refers to what happens if and when these powers are activated. The empirical is the domain of experience that can refer to either the real or the actual. However human observations (emperical) are theory-laden and what is empirical depends upon our knowledge and perspectives: but what is concrete does not – the crucial difference between the appearance and essence. In other words it’s an explanation of elephant by blind person. One individual or group of individual may have a particular explanation which not only depends on his experience but on structures, powers, mechanisms and tendencies that underpin, generate or facilitate the actual events that may or may not be experienced.
For an example: In exit interviews, many of the clients complain of a particular nurse who is very strict but s/he embedded with scientific principles for the betterment of patient or population (not allowing small children inside the ward/ not allowing sitting on bed). In this case nurse may not be wrong, until and unless she communicates properly. Why s/he is like that, not others, what type of pressure s/he has from supervisor and all other complexes need to be evaluated in large context.
The essence of above explanation is that, we need to understand our nursing profession not only through the lenses of the administrators or providers but in larger historical, socio-economic and political context. Let me ask one question “why nurses are not involved in the planning process let it be in any level”. When we scratch surface it visibly shows that there was/is a gender discrimination and social stratification as a major
causal factors. It means majority of nurses were women and they belong to the lower social strata. It’s not only female nurses who have suffered but also the medical women. In India, 1888 Dufferin fund promotes women medical services in India but they were not involved in any of planning/responsibility till late 20th century. Bhore committee (1946) has only few women planners/leaders and that to for a specific topic (reproductive health, as if it’s women responsibility).
With this backdrop, we few likeminded community have thought of having a platform to express the nurses experiences which are real (as defined above) will be conveyed to the our own community, professional bodies and concern political bodies through a NEWS LETTER.
NEWS – LETTER
It’s a volunteer, shared outcome to reach to the concerned population who are striving for the betterment of nursing profession. There are many initiations taken in various parts of India in bits and pieces but it’s not communicated properly.
Nature of News letter
1. As specified it’s a volunteer group, every month (proposed) some of the volunteers will lead with their known strengths.
2. It does not have any boundaries to cover, many nurses are in abroad, they can also have intellectual and other means of contribution. They can compare the Indian health and nursing system with their modules.
3. Originality and fidelity (truthfulness) of the content is to be maintained, so there should be preference to the real experiences of the nurses in their clinical, communities and colleges.
4. For the volunteer group and other nursing concerns it will be distributed to their mail id (E-News letter) and for the professional and political bodies, hard copy of that will be sent.
5. Both Hindi and English language shall be accepted (proposed)
Volunteer team
1. Each volunteer will be carrying this work whenever they are free, its shared responsibility.
2.Team should believe on “white box” principles (clear, transparent, impartial and so on)
3. All team members shall be the member of the google group. The benefit is, if someone conveys a matter it will reach to all the members, next we can have healthy discussion.
4. Each volunteer will read the monthly (proposed) letter then discuss, promote and motivate and support other colleagues to participate and contribute.
5. Volunteers will write their experiences on regular basis.
Presently we will initiate the work under the banner of FINA (federation on Indian nurses association), neither it is a registered body nor has any structured executive body but its group of concerned people for the growth of nursing profession. It was conceptualised with we feeling community to have a better communication within the nursing associations. It’s still in an embryonic stage.
Budget
Designing of the template will be done by few of our friends (nurses) who have experienced and are amateur experts. Content will be reviewed by volunteer group members, if needed the external progressive group help will be seeked. So there is no budget as such required for this part of work.
Print out and postal charges to send this to concerned professional and government bodies need to be thought off (we can find non commercial donors).

This may vary but let me assure that this is not a difficult task to arrange finance. Manpower and their intellectual contribution is important.
