Slogans demanding a hike in stipend and establishment of a new hostel echoed near the administration office of SCB Medical Campus located in Mangalabagh area of Cuttack.
Nursing School students of SCB medical on Tuesday gathered near the administrative building in demanding a Rs 4000 hike in their stipend amount. They also demanded the establishment of a new hostel or renovation of the existing one.
At present they get a stipend of Rs 1000 while they claimed that nursing stipend in other states is Rs 5000 more than what they get here. They also claimed that the present hostel is a 20 years old building and because of lack of maintenance, it operates in a filthy condition.
Rameshwari Sahu, one of the students of the nursing school, said, "We have sent a hand written letter to the Health Department, Chief Minister, Head of the Nursing School and SCB Administrative Body. If immediate action is not taken in favour of our demand it would lead to shut down of the nursing school and hunger strike."
Subhasish Sahu, Secretary, Student Nursing Association said, "While there has been an increase in stipend in the last ten years in all other states of India, Odisha government has failed to provide us with the same. If the government fails to act now nursing students all over Odisha would be forced to boycott their duties and take to the streets."
