With no solution in sight for the ongoing strike by 450 nurses in Bangalore (1,500 others all over the state), medical services at government hospitals such as Lady Curzon and Bowring, Victoria, Vani Vilas and Minto were severely hit. Thousands of patients visit these hospitals every day expecting low-cost treatment.
The nurses, who have been on an indefinite strike for the last 12 days, expected the state Cabinet to take a decision on regularisation of their services on Saturday. But the news of non-inclusion of the issue on the agenda shocked the agitators forcing them to continue their agitation till their demands are met. Although authorities at these hospitals have made arrangements to engage nursing students of various colleges to help the staff nurses, the quality of their services has severely affected the patients approaching these hospitals for treatment.
In-patients suffer a lot as the skeletal staff work overtime to serve them. Nanjamma (name changed), a patient admitted to Lady Curzon and Bowring Hospital, missed her daily dose of medicines on Sunday. The staff nurse who regularly administered her medications did not turn up on time and she had to wait till the nurse on the next shift came in to administer it. Many like Nanjamma have been going without getting their daily doses on time.
The nursing staff not only know the patients’ histories, they also play a crucial role while administering the right medicines at the right time to patients.
