Members of the Male Nursing Association, Andhra Pradesh,
on Wednesday took out a protest rally from the PWD Grounds to the
Sub-Collector’s office where they submitted a memorandum to the
Sub-Collector urging for immediate steps to address their grievances.
Alleging
gender bias on the part of the government in recruitment of nurses, the
irate members said it was unfair to reject them employment after they
had completed the four-year-long nursing course. For decades, nursing
has remained a profession reserved for women in India, especially
in Andhra Pradesh where men were strictly banned from government
hospitals. But the taboo on males dissipated when the government, in a
major policy shift, agreed to admission of men in nursing course which
was otherwise reserved for women. Kerala introduced male nurses along
with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and some northern States which
have male nurses in State-run hospitals but Andhra Pradesh was among the
few States that kept men away from the profession. In 2005, AP took the
first step towards allowing male nurses in the ‘forbidden zone’ after
the government allowed them entry into BSc nursing and general nursing
diploma courses.
