BENGALURU: A flying squad reached an examination centre and entered the lift to go to the sixth floor. The lift gates closed, the power was switched off and they were trapped inside. This was allegedly a deliberate attempt to prevent them from reaching the exam hall where blatant mass copying was on.
This happened during the recently concluded nursing exams conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).
One of the squad members, who is a senior faculty at a well-known nursing college, told Express, “We got information about mass copying at Pavana Nursing College, Nelamangala. But when we reached there, we found that no such college existed and that the exams were going on at the nearby Harsha College of Nursing. The exam hall was on the sixth floor. The moment we entered the lift, the power supply was cut off, and we were locked inside.”
The member explained, “We all felt suffocated and cried for help. But no one came to our rescue. After about 20 minutes, we were let out. When questioned, the college authorities said there was no power. By the time we reached the exam hall, the proof of copying was destroyed. But when we inspected the principal’s chamber, we found some proof and submitted it to the university.”
This squad had more shocks in store. In another college, the members were prevented entry by ‘bouncers’ and even assaulted.  “At Sharada Devi College in Nelamangala, we were not allowed to enter though we went in an official vehicle provided by the university.”
“We were shocked to see more than 10 hefty men outside the exam hall. They took photographs of the female squad members from their cell phones. When we objected, they assaulted us,” the member said.
“When we asked for the CCTV footage, the college disconnected the power supply and said they did not have a generator. We waited for more than an hour, but we were pushed out of the gate.”
According to the squad members, these are just a few examples of the malpractices that occur during nursing exams. “In a college at Yelahanka, we caught two cases of impersonation and debarred the students. But, within a few minutes, we started getting calls from many influential persons, including RGUHS officials,” the member said.
According to the observations of the squad committee, many nursing colleges in the city thrive on illegal admissions. There are two categories of admissions. One, colleges give admission to students who are working outside India. In their name, fake candidates write the exams. Two, colleges give admissions and students need not come to college. They come only during the exams and necessary materials to write and pass the exams are provided by the colleges.
This year, there were 42 examination centres, and 25 of them had violated the university rules and as a result, cases of malpractice were rampant. The squad members have brought this to the notice of the university. “We have met the vice-chancellor and explained to him. He asked us to give it in writing and we obliged,” the member said.
Meanwhile, even after the squad members had alerted the university about the malpractices, the university had allegedly selected the same centres where there were instances of malpractice even during the practical exams.
This year, 52 cases of malpractice were booked by the squad committee in the city. One FIR has been filed at the Central police station on two impersonation cases caught at KIMS exam centre.
RGUHS promises to take action
When contacted, Dr Sachidanand, registrar (evaluation) of RGUHS, said, “We have received complaints and reports from the squad members. We need to consolidate the reports as mild, moderate and serious. In the case of mild and moderate, we will initiate action. Severe cases will be referred to the professional misconduct committee.” He said examination centres cannot be blacklisted unless the charges against them are proved by this committee.
