Now, SGPGI nurses threaten strike

LUCKNOW: The Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) is in for more trouble. The nursing staff of the institute on Saturday gave a letter to its administration demanding cadre-restructuring.

"If in case they failed to get it done by July 1, we will go on strike," said SC Rai, joint secretary of the nursing staff association at the institute.

Rai said that the state government had conceded to their long-pending demands. But the institute didn't bother to implement it despite it being presented at the governing body meeting held on June 12, he said.

"Even in the meeting, the administration didn't present all the facts and this has resulted in the action being delayed," said Rai.

In fact, the state government through a GO on January 10 earlier this year had raised the number of promotional posts of nursing staff. Not only the posts of nurses were raised but the post of chief nursing officer (CNO) was converted into a promotional post.

Earlier, the post was a recruitment post to be filled by a person having a BSc Nursing degree with 10 years of experience. The post would thus be filled by the already employed senior-most nursing staff, bereft of the qualification.

While the posts for nurses in the assistant grade were increased from 222 to 230, the number of assistant nursing superintendents (ANS) has been doubled from 54 to 110. Similar is the case with deputy nursing superintendents (DNS) which have been increased from 14 to 31.

In case of nursing superintendents (NS), earlier there were just two posts. But now they have been increased by seven times to 14.

The steps have been taken on the basis of a report submitted by Dr VK Jain who had asked the administration to raise the number of posts. The report had cited that the technical staff of the SGPGIMS has been given benefits — in many cases, surpassing even the one given to the employees of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

The demands were supposed to be put forward before the financial committee from where the proposal would move off to the governing body to give its final nod.
