KOCHI: The multi-crore nurses’ recruitment scam took a new turn with the victims alleging that the Income Tax Department collected money from them through coercive measures, and that the Department was  trying to balloon the money it had confiscated from Al Zarafa Travel and Manpower Consultants.
“We believe that we were cheated by the Income Tax Department. The officials collected around `2 crore from us, saying that if we did not give the money, the  passports and other documents seized from us would not be released,” said Fr Jomon Cherian, whose wife went to Kuwait through the agency, at a press conference.
“Instead of issuing receipt for the money, the officials asked us to submit a statement indicating that we were giving the money to the recruitment agency.
“Now, we believe that we were deceived by the Department to a larger extend than what the agency has done,” he said.
According to him, a Samithi has been formed to put up the cheating incident on public forums, and to take up the matter with the Kerala High Court.
