"Professionalism through
clinical research"
After 67 years of independence, we nurses are still
leaving in the state of social status where she is recognized as “wearing a
white uniform with an injection and following doctor orders in the hospital”
but in the 19th century itself Florance Nightangale proved herself as a
researcher and presented the mortality data in graphical form and came out with
environmental theory.
Indian nurses are servicng at
various capacities in different parts of the world. 21st century,
India came up with huge shortage of nurses across the globe (pubmed search with
Nurses Shortage keyword reveals that annually more than 100 papers were
published after year 2000 prior to that it was around 50), specially this was a
cry among the developed country and few of the reasons were that their
population was not attracted for this work but also had an increased demand for
the health care specialties.
This was the time where developing
countries like India, were undergoing structural reforms in various sector, one
among them was education. Hence privatization of education system gave rise to
many education institutions. Nursing professionals were having global demand,
especially in developed countries so nursing institutions became a first choice
for most of the business people to invest and earn income. Hence we have seen a
huge increase in number of institutions. This increased the absolute number of
nurses in India which reached 16 lakhs.
Having these many nurses, what are
our contributions to the epistemiology of nursing from ourselves. Introspecting
ourselves reveals that there were few professional asssiciations came forward
to improve but could not able to fill the gap between the clinical practice and
academician. After All India Nursing Association and leaders meeting it was decided
to assess the level of the professionalism within the fraternuty and strategies
to contribute to the nursing knowledge.
As a part of the process, we
following association in collaboration with Safdurjung College of Nursing has
