Scores
of nurses from Delhi, National Capital Territory Region and various
other states today took out a candle light march from Dr Ram Manohar
Lohiya (RML) Hospital to the Jantar Mantar to protest the recent cut in
the health budget, deteriorating public healthcare and rampant
exploitation of the nursing staff.
Delhi Nursing Union general secretary GK Khurana said: “Permanent
nursing staff is slowly being outnumbered by the recruitment of
contractual nurses in the existing government hospitals.”
Khurana added that shortage of government hospitals was denying majority
of skilled nurses, jobs that pay well and allow them to support their
families.
The existing scenario of overworked nurses, nurses tied to insecure work
contracts and high job turnover among nurses has meant less patient
care and, therefore, declining public health, maintained the nursing
community.
The candle march was preceded by the launch of two-day convention to mark International Nurses Day celebrations.
The decision to unite across hospitals and to bring different nursing
associations together on a single platform to discuss common concerns
was taken during the planning meetings called by Delhi Nurses
Union earlier this year.
