VELLORE: The Indian Nursing Council (INC) will soon be launching a nationwide drive in the form of census of nurses to collect data about the practising nurses towards developing a resource base of health care givers.
This was disclosed by T Dileep Kumar, president of the INC, while inaugurating a two-day National Nursing Conference at the Christian Medical College here on Monday. The event is being organized by the college of Nursing attached to the CMC.
Dileep Kumar said that the governing board of the council has also allocated `25 crore for this census drive which would be carried out within a period of one year. “We hope that this census, planned in association with the State level nursing councils, would result in the development of nursing care system in the country, ”he added. According to him, a pilot study was undertaken by the council recently in the Sivaganga district in Tamilnadu in which only 266 nurses were found to be registered and qualified out of the 841 surveyed. The proposed national level census would help in providing biometric identity cards to the eligible nurses so that more focus could be given to strengthening healthcare.
